October 2026

This month we had our first activity along the Sandy Spit Track with several people also working at Trig Hill.

Our Sandy Spit Track work involved the dismantling of the several Gunyahs that had been constructed over time by children and their grown-up helpers. On the one hand, it was disheartening work because it was clear that these bush dwellings had been constructed with such care and effort that we almost felt like vandals by dis-assembling them. A small diary in one let us know just how much the guardians of that particular Gunyah loved the bush environment of Knocklofty. On the other hand, the tall, interlocked branches and bark of these constructions are a significant fire risk in the coming summer months, especially to the magnificent eucalypts. Climate change is driving fire to behave in ever more ferocious and unpredictable ways, so we want to take whatever small steps are possible to mitigate this danger.

Our second activity was off-site on Mt Nelson, assisting the local bushcare group. We hauled 20 or more bags of the flowers from the bush land - although plenty more remain.

Now to the most important part of this newsletter: the Annual Hobart Council Bushcare BBQ on Thursday 19 November, 5.30–7.30pm! This is the Council’s thank you to everyone across all the Bushcare groups for all their hard work over the year. And it’s really way more than just a BBQ. The catering is delicious – plenty of food and drinks for everyone. All are warmly welcome including partners. See the links below to register your attendance:
