August 2026
It’s almost the end of winter – at least it is in terms of our European calendar of four seasons. For everyone enjoying our FoKl activities however, the change in seasons is probably marked more by changes in the local plants, trees, bird and other animal life as much as any sense that we are in this or that calendar season. The acacias are all in full bloom right now as is the Banksia marginata.*
Of course, there are also plenty of invasive weeds coming into flower. This coming month we will tackle first, gorse on the Sandy Spit Track and second, forget-me-nots at an ‘off site’ excursion to Mt Nelson.
*For anyone is interested to know more about the relationship of Tasmanian plants to the seasons there’s a wonderful book published recently titled, Palawa Tunipri: the Ethnobotany of lutruwita-Tasmania.
